Home Cinema | Reference Level Home Theatre
Upon recommendation, Cornflake was briefed to create and install a truly bespoke reference level home cinema, working closely with interior designer, John Teall, to bring his striking visual concept to reality. The client, Roland Emmerich, is a world-renowned film director and the basement of his Kensington townhouse was extended to incorporate this completely unique project.
Cornflake’s award-winning expertise in the design of some of the world’s finest luxury home cinemas has led to us undertaking the installation of Europe’s first ever residential IMAX home theatre, and to developing a fully soundproofed reference level cinema screening room in the London home of Roland Emmerich, famous for films such as Independence Day, and The Day After Tomorrow.
At the design stage we advised as to how to visualise and incorporate technology within and around interior designer, John Teall’s incredible planetary theme, which included his brilliant idea to project a mural in front of the screen, when not in use, to make the space much more interesting and dynamic.
In the simplest terms, a reference level home cinema differs from a standard residential home cinema by the fact that the speakers are finely balanced so that, upon playback, the maximum peak level per speaker will be up to 105dB, as opposed to the standard of between 75dB to 85dB, and will sound as close to the film’s original master.
For this project, we installed a WiFi and data network, together with Lutron smart lighting. We also developed a personalised Cornflake app with an easy-to- use graphic user interface that was custom-designed for this property, where all automated aspects can be controlled and adjusted using fixed or roaming iPads, or remotely via a smartphone or tablet. We installed a DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) projector by Barco to stream content direct from Picturehouse Cinemas. The cinema also includes an anamorphic lens control to switch between native 2.35: and standard 16:9 TV viewing. To add to the immersive atmosphere of the design, this optical port lens for the projector shines into the screening room, like a star in the night sky.
For the cinema screening room, we included a fully masking cinema screen by DT Screens and we specified 7.4 surround sound using reference cinema speakers by Meyer Sound. Together with a surround sound processor by Steinway, this provides the perfect reference level audio that the client required.

“JSRE Partners were instructed to survey and subsequently, design and project manage a full ‘turn -key’ refurbishment programme at Clink Wharf. Cornflake London was selected to realise our intentions on the home automation and home theatre elements of the project. Cornflake’s engineers brought our extensive lighting design to life. Also ensuring our client had full control of multiple areas at the touch of a button. The new home cinema means, staying in this new going out, for our movie buff client, who upon completion of the project, was presented with a truly remarkable space. ”
